Salalah is a growing city full of contrast. There are really old parts, with houses giving evidence of a rugged past, as well as modern shopping centers and business complexes. It’s a growing city that seems to carefully try to enter the modern age without giving up on it’s proud past.

Frankincense

The claim to fame of the Dhofar region besides the climate is arguably frankincense. Frankincense comes from from the resin that “bleeds” out of Frankincense trees, that is hardened and then burned, giving out a very distinctive smell. It’s believed to have special healing properties and that it can enhance spiritual experiences, but it’s most often used just as a nice smell. The region around Salalah has played an integral part of the Frankincense trade, and still today you can find many Frankincense trees there, and you can certainly buy Frankicense.

Waterfalls and streams

The natural beauty and excitement of the landscape is dramatically enhanced during the raining season - the “Khareef” - when water seems to come from everywhere, filling up streams and creating waterfalls. Unfortunately it also makes driving riskier as roads may be swept away or flooded.

Anti-gravity feature

On the road between Salalah and Mirbat, there is as stretch of dirt road that seem to possess some magic. If you place your car in just the right spot, it will start moving all by itself upward, against the incline of the road. Turn of the engine, put the car in neutral, and watch it move. It’s magic!

Spread around the region are many natural spring water wells, where fresh water comes out of the sides of mountains or just out of the ground, to form into streams. Often these springs are lined with orchards, gardens, and parks, where you can stop for a while and rest.
